St. Ansgar has been named the "Garden Spot of Iowa" due to its thriving farmland and stately trees. The town was founded in 1853 by Rev. Claus L. Clausen.

Nearly 1,100 residents live in the boundaries of St. Ansgar, relying primarily on the St. Ansgar School district for their educational needs.

St. Ansgar has several parks near by including Halvorson Park, Acorn Park Golf Course, and Sportsman's Park.
